Air Fryer Veggie Fries

You probably want to know what the story is behind these air fryer veggie fries. After all, us Milner’s have been air frying for a decade and you probably want to know when the air fryer veggie fries became our thing!

Well it goes back to 2015 when we first followed the paleo diet and we started off by cooking air fryer carrot fries.

But it soon turned into a night before grocery shopping Milner family tradition.

We would look at what vegetables was in the bottom of the fridge and use them towards a fridge clear out dinner. Ideally, we were looking for root vegetables that could be cooked for dinner together and that would feed the five of us.

Quite often, we would have courgettes (also known as zucchini), carrots, butternut squash or pumpkin and some sweet potato that needed using up.

It didn’t matter if it was just one small courgette, two ugly looking carrots and butternut squash I had forgotten about. Because once sliced into fries, the vegetables together would make quite a collection.

We would then air fry our root vegetables and serve them with whatever meat we were having for dinner. Though, usually when we are having root vegetables an air fryer roast chicken would be close by.

So, if you have ever wondered what us Milner’s eat the most when we are not creating new recipes for you, then there is a big chance it is roast chicken and air fryer veggie fries.

Best Veggie Fries?

There is no right or wrong answer here. There are a lot of different veggies that make delicious veggie fries.

My favourites are any of the following:

  • Air Fryer Rutabaga Fries
  • Air Fryer Butternut Squash Fries
  • Air Fryer Carrot Fries
  • Air Fryer Pumpkin Fries
  • Air Fryer Zucchini Fries
  • Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

Note, that all the links above are clickable and take you to an individual recipe with that vegetable. That is because those above are the best veggie fries and you can do any of them in the air fryer.

All the above are also ideal for mixing and matching and cooking together as vegetable fries too.

Ideally, choose from the above with what root vegetables you have in right now.

Zucchini & Carrot Fries

Though what I do make the most is zucchini (aka courgette) and carrot fries. This is because I tend to buy these two vegetables the most.

You can guarantee that at any time you will find zucchini and carrots in the bottom of my fridge. I just love them and paired together they make a fantastic quick side for dinner.

You would think that pairing zucchini which cooks fast and is not a root vegetable, with carrots would be a recipe for disaster.

But the zucchini handles a longer cook time well and the liquid from the wet zucchini makes the carrots more moist.

Air Fryer Veggie Chips

Of course, if you live in the UK you may call them air fryer veggie chips. They mean the exact same thing as air fryer veggie fries, just a different name, depending on which side of the Atlantic you live.

Notes

WW. These vegetable fries are ideal for both Weight Watchers and Slimming World. That is because the only food that is not free is the extra virgin olive oil. Split that between four people and its just 1/3 of a teaspoon per person. Plus some always travels into the bottom of the air fryer.

Swaps. Mix and match whichever vegetables that you have in. I love butternut squash and sweet potatoes the most, but any I have mentioned in this recipe work well.

Crispy. I cooked my veggie fries for an extra 12 minutes to improve on the crisp. If you don’t want them crispy, then you can stop the cook time at 20 minutes.

Thanks for reading our air fryer veggie fries recipe on Recipe This. We have many more air fryer recipes for you to check out next. Though if you love veggies, then I recommend you try our air fryer carrots and potatoes.

FAQs

Why are my vegetables not crispy from the air fryer? ›

Don't overcrowd your insert, or else the air fried veggies will turn out mushy. Go light on the oil. Too much, and the vegetables will become oversaturated and not crisp up.

Why don t my fries get crispy in air fryer? ›

Don't overcrowd the air fryer basket.

Don't fill your basket all the way full. You'll end up with soggy fries. I try to keep it at about ½ full for best results, but you can go up to ¾ full as long as you shake the basket during the cooking time.

Why soak potatoes before air frying? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.

Why are my frozen french fries soggy in the air fryer? ›

Place the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding the basket, which can cause uneven cooking and less crispiness. You may need to cook in batches for best results. Shake the basket halfway through cooking to ensure the fries are evenly cooked and crisp on all sides.

What makes vegetables crispy? ›

Add 1 tablespoon cornstarch per pound of vegetables. Toss the vegetables evenly to coat. Spread the veggies in a single layer on a large rimmed baking sheet. Roast until fork-tender and crispy, 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the vegetable.

How do you crisp fries in an air fryer? ›

Does oil make things crispy in an air fryer? ›

However, a small amount of oil is usually necessary to achieve a crispy texture. A drizzle or a quick oil spray is all you need for restaurant-quality fries and golden brown fried chicken, while other foods don't need any oil, like pizza or leftovers you might reheat.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes for fries? ›

A: The main reasons to cut the potatoes and pre-soak in water are: To allow the excess starches and sugars to be removed from the outer surface of the fry strips AND to keep the potatoes from browning prematurely from exposure to air. Covering in water helps the potato from turning a dark color.

Do you add salt before or after air fryer? ›

Season the fries with salt before air frying, but add more salt (preferably sea salt) after frying. The fries soak up the salt better after frying. Fried food generally doesn't reheat well. But with in air fryer, you can reheat them once if they get cold ( on the same day of making).

Should I salt fries before air frying? ›

Oil: Use a neutral vegetable oil suitable for high heat. I use sunflower oil. Salt: Make sure to add the salt AFTER air frying. It does really affect the crispiness in this particular recipe.

Which frozen French fries are best in air fryer? ›

I'd buy either of the Ore-Ida brands again—they shined when cooked in the air fryer—but the Lamb Weston fries are the ones that now make me feel excited about having French fries in the freezer.

Frozen French Fries in Air Fryer

Place frozen fries in a bowl and season with olive oil and salt. Mix well to coat the fries as evenly as possible with the oil and salt . Place fries in air fryer basket and air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 12-14 minutes, shaking once halfway.

Why are chips hard in air fryer? ›

Firstly, if your potatoes are still wet before being placed into an air fryer, this can cause your potatoes not to crispen up. You can avoid this by thoroughly patting dry your potatoes before you place them in the air fryer. Secondly, you might be putting in too many potato chips so they aren't cooking evenly.

Why are my air fryer veggies soggy? ›

Be sure you do not let the vegetables thaw before air frying them. When the vegetables start to thaw is when they get soggy. I have found the best way to cook them is straight from the freezer, as fast as possible.
